DS-160 Photo Requirements and How to Fix an Upload Error

October 30, 2026 | Tool

The DS-160 nonimmigrant visa form asks you to upload a photo, and the upload fails often because the file does not meet the digital image rules.

The rules

  • Square image, between 600 x 600 and 1200 x 1200 pixels.
  • JPEG format, 240 KB or smaller.
  • Colour photo, taken in the last six months.
  • Head about 50 to 69 percent of the image height.
  • Plain background, no shadows, neutral expression, eyes open.

These follow the US Department of State digital image requirements. The consulate decides whether a photo is accepted.

Fixing the upload error

  1. Open the DS-160 photo resizer.
  2. Upload your photo and use the guide oval to frame your head.
  3. Click Make it fit and download the JPEG.

The image is processed in your browser, so your photo is not uploaded to our server.

The rules, explained

Square shape. Photos taken for printed passports are usually rectangular, so they fail here. The digital photo must have equal width and height, anywhere from 600 to 1200 pixels per side.

File size. The limit is 240 KB. Compressing too hard blurs the face, so find the highest quality that fits, which is what the resizer does.

Head size. Measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, including hair, the head should fill about half to just over two thirds of the image height. Too small a head is a common reason for rejection.

Background and expression. A plain light background with no shadows, eyes open, mouth closed and a neutral expression. Take the photo within the last six months, and do not edit it with filters or retouching.

Common error causes

  • Uploading a rectangular photo.
  • A file over 240 KB, or a very low-resolution image.
  • A photograph of a printed photo.
  • Glare on glasses, shadows or a coloured wall.

Frequently asked questions

Is 600 x 600 enough?
Yes. 600 x 600 is the minimum. The tool exports 800 x 800 which is inside the allowed range and gives sharper results.

Do I need a white background?
The guidance asks for a plain background without shadows. White or off-white is the safest choice.

Does this tool replace the official photo tool?
No. It is an independent tool. The consulate decides whether a photo is accepted, so check its instructions too.
