How to prepare your photo in 4 steps

  1. Take a clear photo. Stand in front of a plain light wall in even daylight, face the camera, keep both eyes open and your expression neutral.
  2. Upload it above. Use the zoom and position sliders to place your head inside the guide oval, so the head fills roughly half to two thirds of the height.
  3. Click Make it fit. The tool exports a square 800 x 800 JPEG and finds the highest quality that stays under 240 KB.
  4. Download and upload. Use the file as it is; re-saving it in another app can change its size and break the limit.

Why US photo uploads get rejected

Requirements come from the US Department of State digital image rules. Your embassy, consulate or agency has the final say, so check its instructions too.
