Photo Size Too Small? How to Increase Image Size to 20KB or 50KB

October 30, 2026 | Tool

Most people struggle to make an image smaller. Some government and exam forms do the opposite: they say "file size must be between 20 KB and 50 KB" and reject a file that is only 8 KB.

Why a small file fails

The portal checks both ends of the range. A very small image, such as a 140 x 60 signature, often comes out well below 10 KB even at high quality.

Ways to increase the size

  • Use a larger original. Start from the full camera photo, not a thumbnail.
  • Raise the quality. A higher JPEG quality gives a bigger file.
  • Let a tool pad the file. The exam photo resizer adds harmless padding inside the JPEG when the picture is already small, so it still opens normally.

What not to do

Do not stretch a tiny image to a huge pixel size just to add KB. It looks blurry and may be rejected on the preview. If you need to go the other way, use compress image to a target size.

What decides a JPEG's size

Three things control file size: the number of pixels, the compression quality and how much detail the picture has. A 140 x 60 signature has only 8,400 pixels. Even at the highest quality it can be under 10 KB, so a form with a 10 to 20 KB window rejects it. Raising the size means changing one of those three things, or adding data that is not picture content.

Four ways to bring a small file up

  1. Use the original, larger photo. Resizing from a 3000-pixel camera file and then reducing is better than enlarging a thumbnail.
  2. Raise the JPEG quality. Export at 90 to 100 percent instead of the default.
  3. Convert from PNG to JPG only if needed. A PNG of a simple signature can be small or large depending on content, so check the actual size after converting.
  4. Pad the file. A JPEG allows comment data inside the file. Adding some makes the file larger without changing the picture, and it still opens everywhere. The exam photo resizer does this automatically when the result is below the minimum.

How to check a file's size

On Windows, right-click the file and choose Properties. On Android, open the file details in your gallery or file manager. Note that some sites count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes and others as 1,024, so leave a small margin on both sides of the window.

Frequently asked questions

Does enlarging the pixel size increase KB?
Yes, but a stretched small image looks blurry and the form preview may show it. Use a better original instead.

Is padded JPEG a valid file?
Yes. The extra data is stored in a comment segment, which every image viewer ignores.

What if I need a smaller file instead?
Use the compress-image-to-KB tool linked below.
